Every Saturday during build season, we have a team lunch.  Each team member will contribute to one of those lunches.   Each house will meet the Saturday before their lunch to plan the menu and decide who will bring what.  Each house will need 1-3 parent volunteers to meet with the houses the Saturday before their meal, and then to help, set up the meal.

Kick-Off - January 4

Kick Off Information - January 4, 2013

At this point, we are still awaiting an official time for the live stream to start.  So, I've listed the tentative schedule here.  We will meet at the center at 10:00 AM, and pick up the live stream as soon as it begins.

**New this year**  We would like to invite parents, alumni & alumni parents to attend our Kick-Off.  We think this will be a great way for parents to find out what our game is, to see the beginning of our season, and to get questions answered sooner for you!   Parents are not required to attend, but we would encourage it, and will be very happy to see a parent for each team member.

Lunch will be potluck! BX will be providing pulled pork and pulled chicken for sandwiches. I am looking for 1-2 people with a roaster, or large crock pots who would be willing to cook these meats for us.  Please email or text me if you can, so I can make arrangements to get the meat to you.

Please remember that we do have nut allergies on the team.  So, if you have any nut product in the dish you bring, please note it on the dish.  If you can stay away from nuts, that would be best!  :)

8th Graders/Freshmen:  Please bring healthy sides (veggies, fruit, etc)
Sophomores:  Please bring desserts
Juniors:  Please bring salty or cheese sides(mac & Cheese, chips and dips, chips and salsa, etc.)
Seniors:  Please bring beverages (2L bottles of pop/water/tea/punch, etc)
If you have a favorite item to bring, but it is not your area, feel free.  It is just a general guide. :)

Agenda:

10:00 AM - Arrive at the center.  Begin viewing live stream from FIRST Headquarters as soon as it begins.

Lunch will begin between 11:30 and 12:30 depending on how long the broadcast lasts.

Following Lunch:  Parent discussion of the 6 week build session, tournaments, mentoring, and Q & A. (Coach May & Coach Smith)
Students/Mentors:  Engage in game discussion.  (Coach Poskarbiewicz)

This day is very hard to plan because we have no idea what the challenge will be, how much we will be able to dig into our game.  If possible, the following will continue throughout the afternoon hours, and possibly into the evening.

Begin to work on field build planning.  Any parents with basic woodworking skills are invited to help us with this task. If we are able to nail it down enough, we will shop and start building on Saturday.   The goal is to have our field built within the first week, when possible.

Analyze Game Rules.

Begin Game Strategy.

Brainstorm.

Dig deeper into the rules.

Analyze more!  Strategize more!   The more we understand the game rules, the better we make our strategy, the stronger our robot and team will be.  So, this day is dedicated to understanding every element of the game that we can dig into!

There will be little robot discussion on this day, as we want to focus on understanding the game before we work on the robot design.  :)

End time:   This is flexible.  Students usually begin wearing down early evening (as do mentors).  We may continue past dinner time, or we may call practice at that time.  The day becomes more flexible as we get later in the afternoon.  Please feel free to come and go as needed after 2:00PM. We would like the full team there from 10 - 2 to satisfy your travel requirements.  If you are out of town, or unable to make kick-off, please be sure to email me so that you can get an exemption to this requirement. :)

A note about the season:  Remember, you each have to earn you required hours  (20 to travel, 30 for JV, 60 for Varsity) in the six weeks of build season.  How you do that is up to you.  Thursdays and Saturdays (10 - 2) are required.  Beyond that, you come on the days your are available.  We work every day, and we continue on our goals each day.  If you have a test the next day, stay home and study.  We will also be looking at homework-time at the center for those wanting help from peers, or a quiet place to get homework done before practice.  More details to come! :)

Week of December 16

Week of December 16

First, I would like to thank everyone that helped with our tournaments!  There are so many of you that made the day a success.  I would like to thank Sandy Smith for being an amazing Volunteer Coordinator and working with me for the past few months to make sure we had a fully staffed tournament.  I'm so proud to see our alumni stepping up to take key roles in our events.  Dan Smith(BX Alum), you did an amazing job as our FTA!  Bekah May(BX Alum), our JFLL event was amazing!  You were an awesome Event Coordinator!   Hannah May(BX Alum), our judging ran very smoothly, even with the rearrangement of judging times due to the snow.  Thank you for being our Judge Advisor.  Dave Smith, thank you for making our fields perfect!  Broderick & Nancy Gin, Tanya Brothers, thank you for making our money making end run smoothly.  I don't think I stepped foot in your area, and it was perfect!  Thank you!   Michelle Nieman, thanks for keeping our pits in line!  Cheryl Sommers, thanks for making sure we were safe with glasses!   Richard Marquardt & Jodi Russ, thank you for making our volunteer food and room amazing!   Bill Sommers, thanks for getting our stuff safely to the event, and more importantly, for braving the snow storm to return our stuff to the center!  Bruce Meyer, Thanks for making our audio run smoothly and helping with all of our electronics.    Thanks to Andrew Gin (BX Alum) for being our CSA.  Thanks to Jeff Whalen for leading our inspections!  Thanks to our awesome Announcers Bekah May & Brandon Sidoti.  Thanks to Frank Mojzesz for photographing for us!

In addition to all of those awesome volunteers from our own BX pool of people, we would like to thank Tom & Cindy Nader, Tammy Damrath, Brian Smith and Mark Garver for filling key roles!

And, thanks to ALL of the BX parents, mentors and students who helped those leaders make our tournament such a success.  I would say close to 90% of our volunteer positions were BX team members, family, and/or mentors!   Way to go BX!!  So proud and thankful for you all!!!!!!

PRACTICE:  Thursday 7 - 9 PM - rearrange the center for our season.  :)

The social we were going to have on Friday is going to be rescheduled for January.   With so many of our team going up early Saturday morning, it would be best to put this off for a bit.  :)

LAST CALL for worlds.  If we do not have more participation, we will cancel the trip planning.  At this point, we do not have enough deposits to make it worthwhile to hold our bus.   Please let me know tonight if you are planning to attend worlds.

KICK-OFF:  Saturday, Jan. 4.  Plan on being at the center from 9 AM until late.  More details will be in the blog soon!

One last thank you to all of you for your help this past weekend!  You all really came through and provided our younger FIRST participants two amazing events!  Thank you!!!!

Week of Oct. 28

Week of Oct. 28

Thursday (10/31):  Practice Cancelled for Halloween

Saturday (11/2):  I will be at the center from 10 AM - 3 PM for anyone that wants to work on drive practice for the girls competition, or anyone that wants to work on any of the projects we normally work on at our Thursday practices.  Feel free to stop by for the full time, or part time.  Girls who make the drive team should plan to be here together for at least a couple of hours.

Open leadership positions:

  • Business Managers:  I am looking for 3-4 students who are looking at being a leader in our administrative side.  These people will be our business managers.  You will need to be at practice 15 minutes early to help with money collection.  You will be instrumental in setting up our 2014 budget, and you will be creating our business plan.
  • Chairman's Lead:  This person will be responsible for organizing our chairman's essay, presentation and documentation.  They will lead chairman meetings with others in the group.
  • Safety Captains:  These people will lead our safety efforts.  You will monitor safe practices, and lead the safety meetings.  You will be in the pit during competitions and talking to judges.
  • Publications Lead:  This person will be responsible for leading our publications group.  You will be responsible for newsletters, webpages, social media, etc.
  • Chairman's Presentation Team:  These 3 individuals must present our chairman's presentation to the judges.  They are also responsible for editing the final essay.  It is preferred that the candidate have strong speaking skills and the ability to memorize speeches.  It is a high pressure position, so you must be able to maintain composure while stressed.  It is also important that these individuals not be interested in trying out for drive team.  If you are interested in being on the drive team, you should not apply for the chairman's presentation team.  This is often a multi-year commitment, because experience is vital in this presentation.  Please consider this carefully before applying.
These positions are open to anyone on the team, however, preference will go to veteran members pursuing varsity status.  Applications for these positions must be completed by Friday, Nov. 1.  You can fill out an application here:  Leadership Application

VOLUNTEERS FOR TOURNAMENTS:
Parents, team members, and mentors, if you are interested in helping with our FTC or FRC tournaments, you must register in VIMS.  We would like to fill most major roles with Bedford people.  In order to make this happen, we need you to sign up now.   If you have any problems creating or logging in your VIMS account, please talk to Sandy Smith, our volunteer coordinator for both events.  **Even if you already applied on our volunteer sheet for the FTC event, you must do it in VIMS.  This is new this year.***
VIMS can be logged into here:  VIMS    You can greatly help us out by signing up ASAP!

The December junior high  tournament is FTC, so select FTC, then Michigan, then look for the Bedford Event.  Volunteers are needed Friday night (Dec. 13) and Saturday all day (Dec. 14).

For our high school events, we need parents and mentors who do not work with the team to volunteer.  Volunteers are needed for all 3 days of our event.  It runs Thursday beginning at 4:00 PM for official volunteers (April 3) through Saturday (April 6).   We will also need volunteers to help with set up on Wednesday night (April 2) and that can be entered in VIMS as well.   For this event, select FRC, then Michigan then our Bedford Tournament.

Additionally, we need to send 2 volunteers to work at the Southfield Competitionn on February 28 - March 01. You can sign up in VIMS for this as well, but please let me know you have done so. Please be sure to put FRC 1023 in your team affiliations so that we get credit for you being there. :)

Volunteers that work at least 2 days at an event are giving a volunteer t-shirt.  Volunteers are also given free meals during their work shifts.  Volunteering at an event is a lot of fun.  You will get to see a different side of the event.  Most positions allow you to leave and watch our team when we are up. :)   Please sign up today if you are interested.

Additionally, we will be needing volunteers for our concession stand.  Please DO NOT sign up in VIMS if you want to work the Concession area.  This is a BX thing and not a FIRST thing. :)   We will be asking for volunteers for that soon.   :)

Have a safe and fun Halloween!  See you Saturday or next week!  If you have not yet turned in forms, please do so ASAP!!! Thanks!

Email List Sign Up Links

Due to the change over of email providers that the district has taken, I am no longer able to group email the team.   After looking at some options, Nick pointed me to Mail Chimp.  This is a great way for me to be able to communicate with different groups wanting to keep up to date on the robotics team.  To receive emails, you must sign up on the list.  Please see below for a description of the groups, and sign up for any that are appropriate to you.

STUDENT team members:  Emails are sent regarding deadlines, blog updates, day to day happenings on the team.  Emails that go to students also go to parents, but only students should sign up for this group.   CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP

PARENTS:  Each team member should have at least 1 parent/guardian signed up for this list.  This group receives the same emails as students do, but also receives occasional emails directed solely to parents.  CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP

MENTORS:  This group is for anyone mentoring the team.  It will provide you with day to day happenings of the team, and mentor information.  Parent mentors should sign up for both lists.  CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP

ALUMNI:  This group is for alumni of BX and will provide a monthly update of the what the team has been doing, invitations to special events, and notifications of competitions.   CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP

FRIENDS OF BX:  This group is for those family members or friends that would like a monthly update on the team, instead of the day to day workings of the team.    CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP

FUNDRAISING

Bedford Express requires each team member to fundraise money for the team and encourages team members to fundraise for their travel expenses.  We provide a number of opportunities for earning this money.  Please see below for current opportunities:

YEAR ROUND Fundraisers:

Kroger:  By simply signing up for our team on your rewards card, and shopping at Kroger's, you can earn money for our team.  Details can be found here:  Kroger Rewards   Be careful when selecting our team that you get our team.  There is another team listed as Bedford Robotics, so make sure the one you select has our number or BEDFORD HIGH SCHOOL & Bedford Express.

SEASONAL Fundraisers:

Yankee Candles:  We do 2 Yankee Candle sales.  One in the fall, and one in the winter.  The profit is 40% minus shipping.  The more orders we have, the lower the shipping. we pay.  Our first sale will kick off on Oct. 3 with orders being due on Oct. 24.  Delivery will be in time for Thanksgiving.

Little Casear Pizza Kits:  We do this one jointly with Team 279, Tech Fusion.  Order forms will be available on Saturday and the sale will end in 2 weeks.    We will do this one 2-3 times per year.  Profit is $5 per item sold.

Elder Beerman:  Community Days Booklets.  Each booklet sells for $5.  We keep the entire $5.  We can sign up to sell them in store to incoming customers.  NEW THIS YEAR:  $10 off coupons in the booklet may be used on Super Saver sales!  This is a great opportunity to make 100% profit.    We do one in the fall and one in the winter.

Restaurant days:  We have days where if you eat at a local restaurant they will donate a set amount to the team.

Concessions:  We run concessions at the center and at the tournaments we host.  Last year we made over $3,000 at our FRC concession stand.  This is a big job, and we need many volunteers to make this work.

If you have a fundraising idea, please let me know!  If you would be willing to help with one of the fundraisers, please let me know.

Robot Opportunities

Several teams have banded together to form an ALL GIRL off-season event this year.  It will be held on Nov. 14.  We will be taking interested girls up to this event.  It may require a Friday night stay.  I am still looking into this.  Here is some preliminary information:  All Girl Event Information

Boys, you do not have to be left out.  If you are interested in volunteering (FIRST Service hours) at this event, please email Marjie (Las Guerrillas)  and let her know.  She will be looking for set up people on Friday night, and for workers all day Saturday.     Her email is  Marjiejenkins@gmail.com

This event is being hosted by the Guerrillas, Bees, Bionic Barons & Truck Town Thunder.  ALL BX GIRLS should plan to attend this event.  It is a great opportunity for you!   We will be doing drive team practices and trainings for girls interested in driving at competition.  I would like to climb! :)

Clinton Bolinger (Enginerds) has invited us to their robot boot camp.  We will not be participating as a team, but if any team members are interested in attending let me know.  You can find out more information here:  http://www.team2337.com/robotbootcamp.html

BX Summer Camp Week:

Staff members should arrive at 8:30 AM for the morning session or 12:30 PM  for the afternoon session.  The morning sessions end at noon, and the afternoon sessions end at 4:00.

If you are a group teacher, full attendance is mandatory.  If you are sick, please call me as soon as you know you will not be able to be at a session.  It is only fair to our campers that they have consistent leaders.  Please be sure Bekah, Dianna and I all know if there is a date you will not be there.

If you are working all day, pack a lunch or bring money for fast food.  Fast food runs will be made daily.   On Friday, pizza will be provided to those who have worked all week.

Thank you for performing this service to our younger students.  Many of our campers are not signed up to be on FIRST teams, so encourage them to participate if you see they are enjoying the camp.

There will be no evening practices this week.

Upcoming Events:
After camp, there will be no regularly scheduled robotics meetings until we kick off the fall. Times when Nick and I are working at the center will be posted here, and  you are welcome to come help if you wish.  Special presentations or activities that arise will be posted on the blog.

June 24 - June 28

I am so proud of how all of you performed at the Michigan Advanced Robotics Competition!  MARC was a lot of fun.  We had a chance to see a lot of you perform as drivers, and Nick and I were very impressed with what we saw.  Even though we found ourselves in the bottom of the rankings for most of the events, you all still kept your heads up and did your best.  We saw some great driving even if we were losing matches.  Our veteran drivers did a great job of showing our climb, and Ms. SPOCKE FINALLY made peace with the blue pyramid and decided to play nice. :)  She was also very cooperative at MARC! :)

During the elimination rounds, our veteran drive team did such a great job on the field.  They made all 7 of their attempted climbs!  Winning the "Best Climber" trophy was a well-deserved trophy!  Doing our part to help our alliance win the tournament was a huge team effort, and I am very proud of our whole alliance.   I loved sitting by the Hilltoppers.  What a great team.  Their energy and enthusiasm made it a lot of fun cheering during our matches.  The positive vibe they had, the participation of all, the energy...all made them wonderful alliance captains, and something to strive for in our team.  They celebrate every accomplishment on the field, and I really liked that! Huge thanks to everyone that participated!

Here's what's coming up this week!
Monday - Friday:  Monroe Co. ISD camp (Dianna, Stacee, Courtney, Parth).  Those riding with me should arrive at SRE at 7:45 AM on Monday.  We will meet at 8:00 the rest of the days, but I want to get there a little early for our first day.  If you cannot get to the school, let me know.  We should be back to the center by 3:30 - 4:00 each day.

Tuesday (26):  5:00 - 7:00 Captains Meeting
7:00 - 9:00  Lego sorting party - Anyone that is available that can help us sort Legos so are kits are ready for our camps and for the season.
Wednesday 7:00 - 9:00 PM  - Training session/Practice session for Friday's Presentation - Open to anyone that wants to get one of their presentations done for the year.
Thursday (27):  7:00 - 9:00 PM - This was supposed to be our remodeling meeting, but I am not going to be able to attend.  Nick will still be meeting with all available to rearrange the basics (move the playing field to the east wall like we had it last fall), and we will still brainstorm changes.  Anyone wanting to input ideas for either decorative painting, or shelving ideas should still attend Thursday.  Nick will be making a shopping list of things we need to purchase to organize (and beautify) our center.  We will be meeting on a Saturday to actually do all that.  I will post that date soon.

Friday(28):  Business presentation - I am still waiting for a lot of specifics.  I will fill in the blanks on Wednesday.  I would guess time commitment including travel downtown will be around 10 AM - 2 PM.

Upcoming Dates:
We will be meeting informally on Thursdays from 7 - 9 this summer.  Come when you are able.

ISD Summer Camps:  July 8 - 12:  Dianna, Conner N., Stacee, Ethan, Parth
                                   July 15 - 18:  Conner N., Courtney, Parth
July 22-26:  Dianna, Alex P., Parth
When combined with the VIRUS and TEMPEST volunteers we are pretty well covered except week 3.  We are very short there, with only 5 full time volunteers   We could also use 1-2 more for week 4.

Here is the application. No experience is needed, but I need to get names turned in.  So far I have 3 people for the June week, 1 for the July 8th week, and 1 for the July 22nd week.  I need at least one for the July 15th week, and I would really like to have 5-6 each week!  Please consider helping with this.  I can fit 4 in my car.  Free pizza at the training session and free lunches when you work at camp.  Great for your resumes, college applications, scholarship applications, Dean's List credentials, and great for our team!  NO EXPERIENCE NEEDED!

Summer Volunteer Opportunity

Any students that would like to work at the robotics summer camp hosted by the Monroe County ISD (taught by me), here is what you need to do.  Email me the dates you are available, and a brief description of your robotics experiences.  Please include teams you have participated on, mentored and/or coached, along with your BX experience.  This will be forwarded to Mr. Hite at the ISD.

There will be student assistants from VIRUS and Monroe Jefferson as well. There will be a programming class led by Katherine Hite to train volunteers that may need brushing up (or teaching) on programming.

The camps will be held June 24-28, July 8-12, July 15-19, and July 22-26 from 9:00 - 3:00 each day.  Please remember that our own summer camp will be the July 29 - Aug. 2.

I do not want you to sign up for the MISD camps, if you sacrifice working at our camp.  Ours is our top priority.  If you are not working this summer, and are interested in getting some service hours, or you are just interested in working with Lego Robotics some more, it is a great opportunity.  It would look good on a resume, scholarship application, college application, and of course, Dean's List consideration.

I will have room to take 3 people with me (though I will not wait for anyone that oversleeps or isn't there on time).  I believe we have a couple of student volunteers that can also drive.  We would leave SRE around 8:00, and should be back by 3:30 - 4:00 each day.  Each week is a different group of 16 students.  On Fridays, we will be taking a field trip to a robotics business and having a award ceremony/presentation.  The first three weeks are 3rd - 8th graders.  The last week is high school aged students.

The first to be selected will be the students with the most experience able to volunteer all 5 weeks (4 at MCISD and 1 at BX).  Then we will start filling in gaps with students that can commit for any of the full weeks.  Then we will fill with those that can only work certain days.

It should be a lot of fun and a great experience.  Please get me the email asap.  I will start forwarding them to Mr. Hite at the ISD.  Please be professional in your letter because Mr. Hite will do final selections, so don't assume he knows you like I do. :)

Goodbye 2013, Hello 2014

Thursday night's banquet was full of sadness over losing our seniors mixed with excitement for our incoming leaders.  Congratulations to Brandon, Taylor and Conner for being named 2014 captains and to Dianna, Parth, and Erin for being named co-captains.  We know with your leadership, you will continue to grow our team.  I am excited to hear your ideas and vision for our team!

Our seniors have contributed so much to our team.  We will miss them greatly!  Andrew, Kailey & Bekah, know that you have a very special spot in all of our hearts!  We look forward to witnessing the great things in your future.  Andrew, we have coached you since junior high, and it is hard to imagine not seeing you at practice and on our team!  Kailey, we met you as a freshman, and you have learned so much about FIRST robotics.  You will always be a part of our family!   Bekah, I will miss having my daughter on my team, but I look forward to this new chapter in your life! All of you should visit often, and we look forward to the day when you will be able to mentor our team (or any team you end up near)!  I know you will miss being on a team, but you will just get to see a new side of being on a team now!  Take the next year and figure out what college is like, and then we will see you back if you are ready.

I wanted to take a minute to thank all of you for the wonderful blanket and gift card.  It was very nice of you.  Nick, Hannah & I were honored by this.   This year has been full of many wonderful memories that will not soon be forgotten.  Having the blanket to remind us of all of you is very nice.

I would also like to thank all of you that nominated Hannah, Bekah and/or myself for the Spirit of FIRST award.  I had someone else in mind when we discussed this award, but there is always next year! :)

I am going to start using this blog to pass information along about our team.  I will post a link on FB, and possibly email reminders, but this will be my primary method of communication.  This way, those without FB can keep in touch.  Please make sure you bookmark it and try to read it regularly.  This will be easier to find information on that our FB posts and billion emails. :)

Currently, we have our 2014 applications out.  If you have not signed up for next year, you may do so here:
Returning Team Member Applications for 2014
If you have friends that would like to join our team for next year, they can sign up here:
